USDA NIFA and various commodity boards seek to co-fund research projects that will improve crop production efficiency and advance solutions to critically important problems in U.S. agriculture to increase farmer profitability and sustainability.  These grants are part of NIFA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI A1811).

In Fiscal Year 2022, boards that submitted topics for co-funding support included the Cotton Board, National Peanut Board, United Soybean Board, USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council, California Walnut Commission, United Sorghum Checkoff Program, and the Colorado Potato Administrative Committee.  This arrangement strengthens relationships between NIFA and commodity groups, which also connect with stakeholder groups relevant to NIFA (for example, growers, Congress, etc.).
