USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) state office staff and others from several field offices around Colorado spent the weekend celebrating Earth Day 2023 with kids of all ages at the Children’s Museum of Denver. Proving that anyone can still be a kid at heart, NRCS staff shared in the wonder and excitement that comes with learning about seeds, earthworms, and soil with over 5,500 guests during the Party for Our Planet celebration.

In addition to the fan-favorite soil tunnel, museum goers young and old had the opportunity to speak with NRCS experts and enjoy hands-on-activities. Mary Ellen Cannon, Soil Scientist, demonstrated just how limited and fragile Earth’s soil resources are with a simple apple. Representing the world, the apple is peeled, piece by piece, to demonstrate the limited soil surfaces we have to raise all the food, fiber, and lumber we use every day, all across the world. TJ Tisdale and Nick Boudreau, Soil Conservationists, also helped kids learn about soil horizons and create their own soil profile cards to take home.

Also joined by many other participants who are devoted to the health of the planet - and many of which NRCS works closely with - the event ultimately showcased the range of actors that play an important role in conservation in Colorado. From the smallest child to federal agencies, we all have a part to play in taking care of our planet and its precious natural resources.
