The 9th annual New York State Organics Summit was held  in Syracuse, NY from April 3-5. This year's event had a specific focus on wasted food and food scraps.

NRCS New York State Office employee Paula Morse spoke at the afternoon session titled "The Circle of Life! Making and Using Compost on Farms". This session was designed to teach about composting food scraps, regenerating soils through compost application, mortality composting, and more on agricultural uses. Paula spoke on the composting standard and how if managed properly it can help producers address their resource concerns. She was joined by Katie Culpepper, an outreach and education coordinator at Compost for Good, and Jean Bonhotal, director of the Cornell Waste Management Institute, who spoke about animal mortality composting. Over 50 producers and industry specialists were in attendance. The three speakers discussed technical and financial assistance options for growers.
